Client: Born in Picton in 1942, Claire has always loved reading. During her primary school days she submitted stories to the children’s page of a NZ magazine.
In 2004-2005 she began writing a wide range of short stories that rest, undisturbed, in a filing cabinet in her office. With the writing of this Walter’s Story, Claire has found a way to raise funds for UNICEF, a charity she has supported since 1960.

Claire Bunt has self published this beautiful children’s chapter book with wonderful soft mood enhancing illustrations by Philip Webb.
This book just has an x-factor. The size and shape of the book are perfectly balanced, the hard-cover has a lovely satin feel to the finish, the texture and colour of the stock perfectly match the illustrations. Dana designed the cover and text and she’s managed to get the use of space just right. Not to mention the endpapers, they are gorgeous. It’s a book I picked up and hugged.
It just feels right.
It’s a larger book than your standard junior fiction title and it also has more pages than your standard fiction title. We are always very cautious when advising authors about stepping outside traditional trade sizing and Claire was very brave to want to do so. But sometimes things just don’t fit into the box and the risks need to calculated and weighed with a good illustrating, editing and design team to make it work.
